A Young Girls Letter About Her Service Dog To Dear Abby

SERVICE DOGS SHOULDN'T BE DISTRACTED WHEN ON THE JOB

DEAR ABBY: I am 18, disabled, and work with a service dog. I would like to offer people a few tips on interacting with service dog owners. Perhaps it will lessen some of the daily frustrations all handlers deal with:

1. Not all service dogs are big dogs. I know several Chihuahuas who save their owners' lives every day with their medical alert tasks.

2. Not all disabilities are visible. Please don't ask, "What's wrong with you?" or, "What's your problem?"

3. There are many kinds of service dogs, not just guide dogs. Medical alert dogs help people with everything from epilepsy to diabetes to panic attacks. There are also autism service dogs, mobility dogs and hearing dogs.

4. Please do not pet my dog without asking me first. My dog wears a patch that says, "Do Not Pet." It's there for a reason. Abby, I can't count the number of people who read her patch out loud, then reach out to pet her anyway. Please do not take it personally if we say no.

5. If a dog's handler seems ill, it's OK -- even preferable -- to ask if we are all right. I once had an episode and no less than two dozen people walked right past me while I sat on the floor. Had I been diabetic, I could have died because no one stopped -- including two store managers. -- HOPING TO HELP IN PENNSYLVANIA

DEAR HOPING TO HELP: Thank you for an important letter. What many people fail to understand is that when an assistance dog is out in public, the animal is working and should not be distracted from its task -- which is ensuring the well-being of its owner.

Your last tip was the most important of all. Folks, I shouldn't have to tell you that if you see someone who appears to be in trouble, it takes only a moment to do the right thing and make sure the person gets the help he or she needs. And that includes calling 911 if it's merited.

Another Idiot Leaves His Dog Out In The Sun And Dies

This time it was in Arizona where it was just about one hundred and twelve degrees out there. The Maricopa County sheriff's deputies arrested Kenneth L. Tucker from Phoenix and he is facing animal cruelty along with animal neglect.

You would think that this guy would know that it hot out here, but apparently he didn’t care. The deputies found the dog in a cage with no water and in the sun but when they let the poor dog out he just died.

Sad that’s all I can say.

With All The Money Mariah Carey Makes, You Would Think She’d Pay Her Vet

Mariah Carey’s Veterinarian Cindy Bressler has been trying to get her to pay her vet bill with no luck, so now Cindy took Mariah to court.

First off to see a bill for treating Mariah’s three dogs named Cha-Cha, Dolomite and JJ was thirty seven thousand and eight hundred dollars which seems crazy to me, but I guess when you have money you don’t care. I think I should get a job like that because I love dogs and to get paid that much there would be enough to help the homeless dogs too.

Summers Here, Please Don’t Do What These People Did

Down in Hillsboro, MO you have a guy who would leave his dog tied up outside all day but this time the poor dog couldn’t even reach his water and had been left out in the sun all day which unfortunately caused the dog to die.

I still don’t understand why people do this to their dogs knowing that it gets hot out there. It’s shows a real lack of caring to me when I read something like this.

Then over in Memphis, TN you have a dumb yes dumb couple named Gregory Fisher and Amanda Lillard who decided to leave their poor dog in the car for four hours while they did what they needed to do. But when they finally came out to the car the poor dog was so ill you would think they would have called for some help or something. No they decided to drive off with the dog in the back, but good thing they were pulled over by the police who seen the dog in despair and brought the dog to the vet.

Hopefully the poor dog will survive at this point from being baked in the car.

So Please don’t let this happen to your dog and if you see your neighbor who just leaves their dog out all day, say something to them. And if that don’t work contact the authorities because you just might be the one who saves the animals life.

Yes it another sad story for a woman named Jackie Smart who tried to rent an apartment in Secaucus, NJ. It’s bad enough that she went though cancer and has her service dog to help her live her life, but to be told you can’t rent here is crazy.

There are laws on the books that help her win this case against Landlord Ray Saoud. How low can you get when people won’t even help you out seeing that you have a disability and your dog is there to help.

Eccles Institute Needs Homes For Dogs That Survived Their Testing?

When I read this article about dogs and cats being used for testing at the Eccles Institute in Utah it made me sick. Now they are looking for people to take these poor animals in now that they are finished doing whatever they did to these guys.

They will be holding a adoption fair at the University of Utah in the Eccles Institute of Human Genetics building. I personally think that everyone one that did anything to these animals should be held liable to take care of these pets for life.

This reminds me of the people that just abandon their pets when they move, they are no better. Even though I don’t know what they did to these guys during their lab test.

The Magic Of A Dogs Voice

How Much Sugar In That Dog Treat

Kibble Crack – Vet Exposes Sugary Secret of Pet Treats

Sugar is being added to many pet treats contributing to the growing pet obesity epidemic.

Today’s pet treats aren’t the dog bones of your childhood. Over the past decade, a surprising ingredient has begun to appear on pet treat ingredient lists: sugar.

Following the trend of sugar-laden children’s snacks, pet treat manufacturers are tapping into a dog’s sweet tooth to boost sales. “One of the key reasons I became involved with fighting pet obesity was when I began seeing sugar added to pet treats. I think if more pet owners were aware of this, they may choose their treats more carefully.” says veterinarian Dr. Ernie Ward, founder of the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP) and author of “Chow Hounds: Why Our Dogs Are Getting Fatter – A Vet’s Plan to Save Their Lives” (2010 HCI). “When you have popular treats such as Snausages SnawSomes that list sugars as three of the first four ingredients, you know there’s a problem.”

And the problem is huge. APOP estimates that 45% of US dogs and 58% of cats are too heavy. That equals an estimated 89 million pets that are at high risk for developing conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure and more.

Ward says the problem is linked to money – lots of it. With US pet treat sales estimated to be nearly $2 billion in 2010, the treat bowl has turned golden. “Sugar is incredibly attractive to dogs. If a dog gobbles a treat quickly, an owner is more likely to give another – and another. This adds up to more sales – and profits. In the race for pet treat profits, our pets’ health is being bankrupted.”

Ward also contends that added sugar has behavioral consequences. “Numerous studies in rats demonstrate that overfeeding sugar can create symptoms similar to drug addiction. A dog’s daily sweet treat may be contributing to overeating and other undesirable behaviors. This is why I call today’s high-sugar treats ‘kibble crack.’”

Of course, pet treat manufacturers are quick to blame pet owners for the problem. After all, dogs and cats don’t buy or give these products themselves. Ward agrees – to a point. “Pet owners definitely have a feeding disorder when it comes to their pets. Ultimately it’s up to each owner to control how much they feed their pets. What I want to bring attention to is what ingredients are in pet treats – and why. Pet owners must begin to question why there is sugar in a treat that claims to help teeth.”

Ultimately both the pet food industry and Ward have pet’s best interest at heart. “Today we have some of the best pet foods and treats we’ve ever had. For that, I am grateful. At the same time, we’re seeing some of the unhealthiest products masquerading as wholesome and nutritious. It’s time we reveal the sugary secret that is contributing to obesity in pets.”

Dr. Ward’s Dirty Dozen – Popular Sugary Pet Treats

- Canine CarryOuts Chew-lotta - Dextrose first ingredient
- Snausages SnawSomes! Beef and Chicken Flavor - Sugars 3 of first 4 ingredients
- Pedigree Jumbone Mini Snack Food for Small Dogs - Sugars 2 of 3 first ingredient

Dog Fighting DNA Gets One Step Closer To Cracking Down On Animal Cruelty

Dog-Fighting DNA Database Breaks New Ground in Crackdown on Animal Cruelty

The nation’s first criminal dog-fighting DNA database has been established by the American Society for the “Canine CODIS” Technology Unveiled by ASPCA, Humane Society of Missouri, Louisiana SPCA & University of California, Davis

The nation’s first criminal dog-fighting DNA database has been established by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), The Humane Society of Missouri (HSMO) and the Louisiana SPCA (LA/SPCA), and will be maintained at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) Veterinary Genetics Laboratory. Known as the Canine CODIS (Combined DNA Index System), the database is designed to help the criminal justice system investigate and prosecute dog fighting cases and address the growing problem of dog fighting using 21st century technology.

“Dog fighting is a multi-million dollar criminal enterprise that leads to the cruel treatment and deaths of thousands of dogs nationwide every year,” said Tim Rickey, the ASPCA’s Senior Director of Field Investigation and Response. “This database is an unprecedented and vital component in the fight against animal cruelty and will allow us to strengthen cases against animal abusers and seek justice for their victims.”

Rickey, the former Animal Cruelty Task Force Director at HSMO, Kathryn Destreza, the ASPCA’s Southeast Regional Director, Field Investigation and Response and formerly Director of Humane Law Enforcement for the Louisiana SPCA, and Dr. Melinda Merck, the ASPCA’s Senior Director of Veterinary Forensic Sciences and the nation's premier forensic veterinarian, collaborated to create the database, working with Dr. Randall Lockwood, the ASPCA’s Senior Vice President of Anti-Cruelty Initiatives and Training.

“This database will connect investigations across the country and internationally, creating multi-jurisdictional collaboration,” said Ms. Destreza, who presented on the Canine CODIS at the recent Veterinary Forensics Conference in Orlando, Fla. "It’s another tool we can use toward the elimination of dog fighting.”

Dr. Merck, who testifies as a forensic veterinary expert for animal cruelty cases around the country, added, “Juries expect forensic science to support the evidence that’s presented to them, and animal cruelty cases are no exception. This database breaks new ground in supplying that evidence for dog fighting investigations.”

The Canine CODIS contains individual DNA profiles from dogs that have been seized during dog-fighting investigations and from unidentified samples collected at suspected dog-fighting venues. The HSMO provided the 400 original and initial samples of dog DNA collected from dogs that were seized last July during the nation’s largest dog-fighting seizure ever, a multi-state raid led by Mr. Rickey that followed an 18-month investigation by federal and state agencies.

The database is similar to the FBI’s human CODIS, a computerized archive that stores DNA profiles from criminal offenders and crime scenes and is used in criminal and missing person investigations. DNA analysis and matching through the database will help law enforcement agencies to identify relationships between dogs, enabling investigators to establish connections between breeders, trainers, and dog-fight operators. Blood collected from dog fighting sites will also be searched against the Canine CODIS database to identify the source.

“The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory has one of the largest sample databases in the world,” said Beth Wictum, Director of the Forensics Unit of the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory in UC Davis’ School of Veterinary Medicine. “This is important for estimating the rarity of a DNA profile. The Canine CODIS database is unique because it includes many more DNA markers than are normally tested, and that provides greater power when calculating match probability or assigning parentage.”

“When these cases come to trial, it’s important to make your strongest case,” she adds. “DNA evidence not only establishes links between owners, breeders, and dog fighting sites, it tells a story. We can tie blood spatter on pit walls and clothing, or blood trails found outside of the pit, to a specific dog and tell his story for him. We become the voice for those victims.”

How the Canine CODIS Database Works
DNA samples from animals have been used in forensics investigations for over 15 years to help solve criminal investigations. In some cases, the animal may be related to the suspect, the victim or the crime scene. In other cases, the animal itself is the victim or perpetrator.

In dog-fighting investigations, the dogs’ inner cheeks are swabbed to collect DNA in their saliva at the time they are seized. These swab samples are then submitted to UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory for DNA testing. Law enforcement agencies also collect DNA at suspected dog-fighting venues in samples of blood, saliva, tissue, bones, teeth, feces and urine. These unidentified DNA samples can be submitted to the laboratory at UC Davis for analysis and archiving in the database.

When an agency submits a sample to the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory, the DNA is analyzed and the Canine CODIS database is then searched for corresponding DNA profiles. In the event the database search locates a match for the submitted DNA, the lab will notify both the agency that submitted the new sample and the agency that submitted the existing sample. The Canine CODIS database is only available to law enforcement agencies; analysis is part of the cost of testing.

Give A Dog A Ball

Footie fever isn’t only for The World Cup -- charity asks for football donations. Homeless hounds love to chase a ball about too

London animal rescue charity asks for donations of unwanted footballs for dogs to play with in their kennels.

The Mayhew Animal Home is asking those footie fans who have World Cup fever to think of others who like the beautiful game –homeless hounds.

The rescue centre in Kensal Green is asking for donations of footballs for the dogs waiting in kennels to be adopted by a new owner. As well as the regular walks that each dog goes on every day at the Home, there are two large exercise areas at the centre where dogs can go and play –ideal for a bit of a kick about with the staff and volunteers working on the kennels.

Mayhew CEO, Caroline Yates, said: “We make sure that every dog in our kennels gets at least four walks a day and time to play in our exercise runs. Pretty much all of the dogs here are footie mad and just love to chase a ball up and down the run. However, due to the enthusiasm for the beautiful game, these footballs often don’t last too long and we need to replenish our supplies!”

“We are asking World cup fans to spare a thought for our football loving dogs and have a rummage to find any balls they could donate to the Home and make a homeless hound very happy.”

Anyone can leave donations at The Mayhew’s reception at The Mayhew Animal Home, Trenmar Gardens, Kensal Green, London NW10 6BJ.

The Mayhew Animal Home was established in 1886 for the benefit of “the lost and starving dogs and cats of London so that they should have sanctuary from the cold inhumanity they are being dealt outside”. Today, The Mayhew is one of the busiest animal sanctuaries in London, rescuing thousands of animals from cruelty and neglect each year. We provide shelter and care for cats, dogs, rabbits and when the need arises, for a wide variety of other animals.

The Mayhew Animal Home strives to tackle the companion animal welfare crisis from every possible angle. The organisation is pro-active, innovative and continually works to assist animals and their carers. The Mayhew offers a wide variety of community services providing advice, care and assistance to animals and their carers whatever their circumstances.

"Strangely enough, a lot of them tell us they ruled out names they'd be too embarrassed to shout in public when calling their pets back to them. When you think about the names these owners finally decided on – like 'Lord Chubby Pruneface' and 'Optimus Pants,' – it really makes you wonder what didn't make their cut."

I guess the world knows now about Mariah Carey’s new addition to the family when her Jack Russell ChaCha gave birth to a puppy the other day. And Kelly Osbourne got a little Pomeranian puppy earlier this month.

I really would have loved to see these two with new dogs from a shelter which really would have made a statement to adopt first and help save a dog today.

Why Would You Rob A Pet Store When There’s So Many Dogs Just Waiting In Shelters

Well it looked like two guys from Stafford, Texas area risked being caught when they took three dogs during a break in at the local Pets R Us store.

Hopefully the police catch these two and get the miniature pinscher and two Shih Tzu puppies back.

Pennsylvania AG Shuts Down Dog Kennel

Ag Department Cites Lehigh County Man for Operating Kennel Without License, Other Violations

The Department of Agriculture's Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement this week cited M. J. Cohen, of Coopersburg, Lehigh County, for operating a kennel without a license and failing to license individual dogs.

State law requires anyone keeping or transferring more than 25 dogs in a year cumulatively to acquire a kennel license from the bureau. Individual dogs not part of a kennel must also be licensed each year. Licenses can be purchased through county treasurers.

"Evading the law only creates more problems for people when they are caught," Special Deputy Secretary for Dog Law Enforcement Jessie Smith said. "The law applies to everyone, regardless of their intention. It is best for those wishing to operate a kennel in Pennsylvania to apply for the appropriate license and continue to stay in compliance."

Cohen was issued a cease and desist order under the new Dog Law statute prohibiting him from euthanizing, buying or selling any dogs.

Smith said additional charges may be filed related to the conditions at Cohen's kennel.

"Pennsylvania's new Dog Law is clear about proper kennel conditions," said Bureau of Dog Law Director Susan West. "Act 119 of 2008 raised the bar for commercial kennels in Pennsylvania and signaled that operators of substandard kennels will not do business here."

For more information about the Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement or to view kennel inspection reports, visit www.agriculture.state.pa.us, click on "Bureaus, Commissions & Councils," and select "Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement."

Tips about unsatisfactory or illegal kennels can be reported confidentially by using the department's online complaint form, or calling 1-877-DOG-TIP1.

Procter & Gamble Recall For You Cat Lovers

P&G Recalls Specific Canned Cat Foods Due to Low Levels of Thiamine (Vitamin B1)
Contact:
Jason Taylor
513-622-3205

The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) (NYSE:PG) is voluntarily recalling specific lots of its Iams canned cat food in North America as a precautionary measure. Diagnostic testing indicated that the product may contain insufficient levels of thiamine (Vitamin B1), which is essential for cats. Cats that were fed these canned products as their only food are at greater risk for developing signs of thiamine deficiency.

The following Iams canned cat foods are included:

Product Name

Iams ProActive Health canned Cat and Kitten Food – all varieties of 3 oz & 5.5 oz cans

Date on Bottom of Can - 09/2011 to 06/2012

This recall is limited to only Iams canned cat food distributed in North America. No other Iams pet food is involved.

Early signs of thiamine deficiency may include loss of appetite, salivation, vomiting and weight loss. In advanced cases, signs may include ventroflexion (downward curving) of the neck, wobbly gait, falling, circling and seizures. Contact your veterinarian immediately if your cat is displaying any of these signs. If treated promptly, thiamine deficiency is typically reversible.

Consumers who have purchased canned cat food with these codes should discard it. For further information or a product refund call P&G toll-free at 877-340-8826 (Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM EST).

Did You Make Plans To Be At BlogPaws 2010 West

BlogPaws to Hold its Second Pet Blogging and Social Media Conference September 9-11, 2010

BlogPaws, the original pet blogging and social media community, will hold its second conference, BlogPaws 2010 West, in Denver September 9-11, 2010. The event will bring pet bloggers, pet brands and the online pet community together for networking, education and to create change for pets in need.

The event that has been dubbed “The Woodstock of the Pet Blogging Community” will be replicated this fall in Denver, CO. The founders of the first-ever pet blogging and social media conference, BlogPaws 2010, announce they are hosting BlogPaws 2010 West, a second event bringing pet bloggers, pet brands and the online pet community together for networking, education and to create change for pets in need. The event will take place September 9-11, 2010 in Denver, CO.

BlogPaws 2010 West comes on the heels of the much-acclaimed inaugural BlogPaws event, which took place April 9 & 10, 2010 in Columbus, Ohio. Nearly 250 pet bloggers, media, speakers and brands came together for a weekend full of learning and inspiration. Attendees lauded this first-ever pet blogging and social media conference as “a life changing experience,” and “a visionary and progressive-thinking, paw-forward group founded by pet bloggers.”

BlogPaws 2010 West will feature dynamic keynotes and interactive education sessions covering topics pet bloggers rely on for their craft: social media strategies, search engine optimization, content development, blog monetization, product reviews, pet photography techniques, tips and tricks for using popular blogging platforms and more. The event will also feature a specific track for veterinarians interested in social media and blogging as well as special sessions for animal rescue and shelter administrators and volunteers.

The April BlogPaws event prompted throngs of pet bloggers worldwide to participate in the event’s signature movement, “Be the Change for Pets in Need.” BlogPaws 2010 West will continue to build on this program, encouraging attendees to support and promote one another’s efforts. “Some terrific initiatives have emerged as a result of the last event,” said Caroline Golon, BlogPaws co-founder. “From speaking out against puppy mills to educating others about the negatives of shock collars to lobbying against breed specific legislation, conference attendees have used their blogs and this community to find remarkable ways to make a difference for pets.”

As part of its own mission to be the change for pets in need, BlogPaws donates a portion of event proceeds to animal rescues and shelters. “The April BlogPaws event raised more than $13,000 in cash and another $4,000 in food and product donations from our sponsors for three wonderful organizations,” said BlogPaws co-founder Yvonne Divita. “In April we supported Animal Haven in New York City, Pets without Parents in Columbus, Ohio and Animal Friends in Pittsburgh. We’re looking forward to selecting three more recipients from nominations made by BlogPaws 2010 West attendees.”

Registration is underway and BlogPaws founders expect a sold out event. “It's clear that BlogPaws has struck a chord with the online pet community,” said Tom Collins, co-founder. “When you bring together people with a common passion, add an Internet connection and invite a few cats, dogs and ferrets, you have a truly remarkable group with a collective voice making things happen. We can’t wait to see what’s next.”

Animals Rescued From An Animal Rescue?

View more news videos at: http://www.nbcnewyork.com/video.

The Herding Dogs Rescue shelter in Yaphank, NY that is owned by Deb Miller had her place condemned by the Brookhaven officials due to the place being so bad.

It’s sad where you see a shelter being shut down because they are unable to take care of the animals. So now we will have to see if Deb Miller will be charged with Neglect and animal abuse. The worst part is that Deb was just trying to help save the animals but seemed to be way over her head with her rescue shelter.

Now the Suffolk SPCA is looking for your help in adopting or fostering one of these animals, if you want to help please call 631-382-7722.

Guess Who's Hosting The 22nd Annual Worlds Ugliest Dog Contest

Actor Jon Reep Hosts the 22nd Annual World's Ugliest Dog ® Contest June 25 in Petaluma, CA

Actor Jon Reep will emcee and bring even more humor to the World's Ugliest Dog ® Contest at the 22nd annual event held in Petaluma, California during the Sonoma-Marin Fair on Friday, June 25. The contest is renowned worldwide and has launched many homely but beloved dogs into star status. Reep will channel his inner comic and love of dogs to entertain the audience.

In a competition where personality is important as having the right "ugly" credentials, World’s Ugliest Dog ® Contest organizers have invited Hollywood personality, actor and comedian Jon Reep, to emcee the 22nd annual contest set for Friday, June 25, 2010 in Petaluma, California.

"I'm hosting the World's Ugliest Dog ® Contest because Mario Lopez was too pretty," said Reep.

“We’re thrilled to have him,” said contest organizer Vicki DeArmon. “Jon brings a lot of personality to the stage and a love of dogs. We’re looking forward to his stage antics.”

As an actor he’s played the crazy farmer “Raymus” in the movie Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, and the dim-witted cop “Gerald Bob” from the ABC Sitcom Rodney. But most people probably know him as Dodge Truck's popular "Hemi guy"; who leans out of a beat-up car and utters the now famous line: "That thing gotta Hemi?”

Reep also won Season 5 of Last Comic Standing on NBC. He’s made appearances on Comedy Central's Premium Blend, Comedy Central Presents: Jon Reep, TBS's Pit Stop Comedy, NBC's Late Friday, CMT's Comedy Club & Comedy Stage, and CMT’s Bandits vs Smokies. His just released DVD, Metro Jethro, is out now. Fans can find out what a Metro Jethro is at www.JonReep.com.

DeArmon said, “Occasionally, we’ve had folks who think the World’s Ugliest Dog ® Contest makes fun of ugly dogs and that the dogs’ feelings are hurt by being called ugly. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, these are some of the best-loved dogs in the world and many of them are ambassadors for dog-related causes. Jon’s a great reminder that the World’s Ugliest Dog ® Contest is for people who love dogs but also have a sense of humor. That’s why the contest has lasted so long and grown so popular. People need a reason to laugh. With Jon, they’ll have even more.”

The World’s Ugliest Dog ™ Contest is scheduled for Friday, June 25, 2010 at 6 p.m. during the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California. Entry forms can be downloaded at www.sonoma-marinfair.org or requested by calling 707-283-3247 (FAIR). (Reep’s video can be viewed there as well.) The 2010 World Champion will take home a minimum of $1,000 in prize money and prizes, a trophy, and a $1,000 modeling contract with contest sponsor House Of Dog. The Sonoma-Marin Fair also issues a YouTube video of the contest highlights immediately following the contest. The winner of this internationally known competition is catapulted into the international limelight. Past winners have had their photos in newspapers across America and overseas and are featured guests on talk shows.

What a great story this has turned out to be.

Top Ten Dog Beaches

FIDO Friendly Magazine Announces its Top 10 Fido-friendly Beaches in the United States

FIDO Friendly magazine presents its Top 10 Sizzling Summertime FIDO-Friendly beaches. The list was compiled of those beaches that have little or no leash restrictions.

FIDO Friendly magazine (http://www.fidofriendly.com) presents its Top 10 Sizzling Summertime FIDO-Friendly beaches. The list was compiled of those beaches that have little or no leash restrictions.

Huntington Beach Dog Beach, Huntington Beach, California – There are beaches and then there are those with Dog in their name, imploring us to wag our tails in the direction of Huntington Beach Dog Beach. Aptly located about 10 miles from Disneyland, this beach is an amusement park of sorts for Fido. Leash-less and living large is how Fido will feel sinking his paws into the sand. Doggie alfresco diners abound in the area, so Fido and his guardian can cool down after a hot day of surf and sand. http://www.dogbeach.org/

Carmel City Beach, Carmel-by-the Sea, California - Wish we all could be California dogs might just ring true when visiting this very Fido-friendly beach. Leave preconceived notions and leashes in the car because Fido is free to frolic off lead under voice control. So Fido friendly is this beach area that they have their own newspaper, Doggie Gazette. Nearby Carmel Fountain is for dogs only and many stores along Ocean Avenue allow Fido to shop inside with his guardian. . http://www.doggiegazette.com/

Cape San Blas beaches, Florida Panhandle/Gulf County: Some areas like Fido on their beaches, but the sandy coastline of Cape San Blas says they LOVE dogs on their beaches! Nearby pet-friendly rentals add to the convenience and hospitality extended to canine travelers. Fido is allowed to take in the ocean air ANY time, as there are no set “dog” hours. Several restaurants in the Apalachicola area welcome Fido, so hit the surf and refuel on the turf. http://www.thecapeescape.com/Pets.html

Fort DeSoto Dog Beach, Fort DeSoto, Florida: An entire section of this Fido-friendly beach is totally leash-free! In addition to having fun in the beach sun, Fido is welcome to visit Paw Playground and play to his heart’s content. Wash sandy paws and cool Fido off with a frolic in the water or borrow the hose available on site. “Fido’s dream beach come true,” “family and Fido-friendly to the max” and “clean and serene” are all comments beachgoers have shared about this tail-waggin’ find! http://www.fortdesoto.com/pawplayground.php

Dog Beach, Ocean Beach, California – Year round off lead: four words to delight any Fido-friendly beachgoers ears. This rings true at the popular Dog Beach in beautiful Ocean Beach. This section of beach is located at the north end for canines to let loose and lap it up. Ocean Beach is a small community located a few miles northwest of San Diego. Off-leash is a dog’s Disneyland, and with 38 acres to explore, this beach has been open to Fido since 1972. Keep the good karma swimming and please pick up after your pet. http://www.sandiego.gov/lifeguards/beaches/ob.shtml

Coronado Dog Beach – Coronado, California: Draw paw circles in the sand at this beachy find near the Naval Air Station. Fido is welcome to channel his inner surfer, as Coronado Dog Beach is leash-less. Restrooms for humans on premises and a water spigot at the entrance to wash sandy paws. The beach is far enough from the road to feel safe and close enough to the ocean to catch a wave. The Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog competition is held nearby as Fido takes to the water to surf. Check it out at: http://loewssurfdog.blogspot.com/

Dog Beach, Bonita Beach Road – Lee County, Florida: Bring soda for your thirst and expect SOODA when you arrive. SOODA is Save Our Off-Leash Dog Area, and is a group of local volunteers who maintain this beach. Beach size varies according to tide and time. Located in the coastal tideland area of south Lee County, this leash-less beach is the perfect place to leave paw prints in the sand. The county’s honor system trusts that Fido will be under guardian command, and as always bring waste bags. http://www.flsooda.org/

Town of Duck Beaches, North Carolina – Beaches aren’t public access, so for those traveling with Fido, you’re in for unleashed luck in Duck! Dogs are permitted to play on the town’s beach under voice control of their watchful guardian. Fido is allowed off lead on Duck’s beach year-round. Due to their lack of public access, the beaches tend to be less crowded and more intimate. In fact, the Travel Channel’s annual America’s Best Beaches List ranks Duck’s beach amongst the highest. With its miles of clean beaches and surrounding shops and activities, not only is this a Fido-friendly beach town but a great vacation getaway. www.townofduck.com/pets.htm

Susan Kimmelman Off-Leash Dog Beach (Montrose Dog Beach) – Chicago, Illinois: Dogs are welcome to channel their inner puppy and head for sandy beaches from the waves of Montrose Dog Beach. Ensconced in shallow waters for the smaller Fido ‘guppies’ and rougher waters for the braver pooches, this beach has something for everyone in Fido’s family. Leave the leash at home (or at least in the car) and be sure to pay your $5 fee for a dog beach tag. If visiting Chicago, you’ll want to make a trip to this fun-in-the-sun getaway for the canine member of your entourage. http://www.mondog.org/wp/?page_id=19

Del Mar Dog Beach, Del Mar, California – also known as North Beach. From 29th Street to the Solana Beach border, leashed dogs are permitted from June 15th through Labor Day. From Labor Day through June 14th, Fido is welcomed to explore the beach leash-free under guardian voice command. Looking to mingle with like-minded Fido folk and their furry friends? Del Mar Dog Beach is a very social and easygoing, clean beach where dogs can mingle together amidst the ocean’s surf. Pay attention to high tide periods so you can sink paws into sand and not rocks. http://www.delmar.ca.us/visitors/Pages/DogBeach.aspx

About Pro Plan® Rally to Rescue®

Smaller pet rescue organizations help place nearly half a million dogs and cats in homes each year and represent nearly 45 percent of all pet adoption agencies. However, they are often overlooked by potential donors due to more limited fundraising and marketing resources.

The Purina® Pro Plan® Rally to Rescue® campaign is committed to Doing More™ to help pet rescue organizations nationwide raise funds and awareness via local adoption events. The program helps pet rescue organizations give rescue pets the nutrition and care they need and the loving homes they deserve. To help raise awareness and promote adoption, Rally to Rescue® Ambassadors host adoption and fundraising events at pet retailers across the country and sell Doing More™ for Pets T-shirts onsite, online at www.rallytorescue.org and at Rally Across America events this summer and fall.

About Pro Plan® Rally Across America

Encouraging pet lovers to Do More™ for rescue pets and the organizations that care for them – by adopting, volunteering and giving – is the focus of the fourth annual Purina® Pro Plan® Rally Across America national road tour. This year, the tour has set a goal of 400,000 pet adoptions by year end, building on the current total of more than 320,000 adoptions since the Rally to Rescue® program inception in 2005. The tour also encourages pet lovers to contact local organizations and offer to help rescue pets by volunteering a few hours or by giving pet care items or a monetary donation, both of which provide valuable help.

In addition, event goers can receive training tips from Purina® Pro Plan® trainer Melissa Heeter with her rescue dog Viola. Heeter provides training techniques customized to pets’ varied and unique personalities. Pet owners can use these techniques at home with their own pets or their newest four-legged friend.

“When looking for a furry addition to their family, some potential pet owners may feel reluctant about adopting rescue pets out of concern they were given up because of behavioral problems or because they may have been abused,” Heeter said. “But that’s not the case with many rescue pets and the truth is, just like any other pet, they can be a loving, wonderful, life-long companion. Often it just takes a little training and patience for rescue pets to feel more at ease with their new environment.”

Surf Dog Ricochet, The SURFice Dog Raise Funds For The "Let's Move Together"

SURF DOG RICOCHET & LEASH YOUR FITNESS RAISE OVER $10,640 IN DONATIONS, WHILE RAISING AWARENESS OF HUMAN & CANINE ARTHRITIS.

Surf dog Ricochet, the SURFice dog who raised almost $30,000 for charitable causes in the last eight months, teamed up with Leash Your Fitness to raise funds for the "Let's Move Together" arthritis walk this past Saturday. Together, they raised over $10,640 in donations, and increased awareness of the disease which affects both humans and canines. The walk was held at the NTC Promenade at Liberty Station.

Leash Your Fitness, the only workout class in San Diego where your dog is your workout partner, co-sponsored the 12 member "Leash Your Fitness with Kima" team. Ricochet joined the team because her guardian and Handler, Judy Fridono has been suffering with arthritis since she was a teenager, and because there are so many dogs affected by this debilitating disease. Ricochet fundraised in earnest during the week leading up to the walk, and many of the donations came from her 8100+ incredibly supportive Facebook fans who were touched by her inspirational video.

Due to the support of her donors, Ricochet was the 2nd top overall fundraiser of the 2010 eighth annual walk in San Diego, raising more than $5480 in donations. In fact, two of the top fundraisers for all of San Diego were dogs Ricochet and Kima! Kima, the arthritis walk honoree dog chair came in third place overall.

Ricochet was the top fundraiser on the "Leash Your Fitness With Kima" team. And, the team came in second place overall as the top fundraising team for this year's walk with all members making a significant impact.

Leash Your Fitness also had incentives to help motivate individuals to join their team... including six weeks of FREE training. The team met weekly at various parks throughout San Diego for one-hour "walk the circuit" classes, which incorporated upper body strength and core exercises, balance, yoga and dog obedience. The team training was designed to build endurance for the three-mile walk, all while preparing dogs to walk in a group setting. For more information on Leash Your Fitness ongoing classes, visit http://www.leashyourfitness.com/index.htm

Ricochet, and Leash Your Fitness are thrilled with the results of their fundraising, and sincerely thank all their supporters and donors. They will continue to raise awareness for both humans and canines who suffer from this disease.

I Think There's A Dog In There Somewhere

You would never know that this photo is a dog when you first look at it. The owner Paul Korneluk of Nanaimo, B.C. sure didn't care about this little lhasa apso/shih tzu mix looking at how matted this poor little dog is.

Now Paul Korneluk is being charged with cruelty to animals for his neglect to this dog. This poor dog had all kinds of sores and infections after the vet took of five pounds of fur.

If You’re Thinking Of Buying A Puppy You Might Want To Watch This Video About Parvo Virus

This video was taken in Victoria and I thought that it would be nice to share this because it could happen any way when you buy a puppy and you don't know all the info about their shots.
