Over and over again these so called home breeders are doing more damage to are buddies then they are worth. This time a home breeder in North Platte, NE was raided by the Lincoln County Sheriffs along with the help of the local animal shelter when they took eighty dogs from the home.
So again the local shelters are stuck with these poor dogs and they will have to foot the bill to check all these dogs health before any of them can be adopted. When will the greed stop and allow the dogs that are homeless to be adopted to a loving home. We read all the time how many of these dogs are killed because they weren’t adopted which is sad because there are so many dogs out there.

Free On-Demand Dog Training Helps Christmas Puppies “Get their Cute Back”
Free Website Offers Daily Training Lessons to Help Dog Owners Train their Dog in Just 10 Minutes a Day
Beginning on January 1st and running for the entire month of January, new dog “parents” and veteran dog owners alike can visit http://newyearnewdog.yourbestdogever.com for daily lessons on how to teach their dogs 13 vital obedience and behavior skills that are the foundation for raising a well-behaved dog.
The expert behind the site is Krista Cantrell, a cognitive animal behaviorist, dog trainer, dog-book author, award-winning agility competitor, and dog whisperer for national television, radio, and print media.
Cantrell decided to launch the site now, for the new year, to reach out to the large number of “Christmas Puppy” owners who decided to adopt, rescue, or buy a dog over the holidays, and who are now quite likely feeling overwhelmed with the responsibility that comes with dog ownership.
“Puppies are cute. Even misbehaving, mouthing, biting, barking, jumping and ‘accident prone’ puppies are cute...at least for a while,” says Cantrell. “But what happens when the ‘cute factor’ gives way to the reality that that cute puppy is going to grow up into a dog that needs more than just love to become a well-mannered member of your family?”
When reality sets in, as it soon will for the tens of thousands of new “Christmas Puppy” owners out there, where can these overwhelmed new “parents” turn for help?
That’s where Cantrell’s new site comes in.
The “New Year, New Dog” dog training website will offer more than 30 free dog training lessons that solve common dog obedience problems and teach basic training methods such as house training mishaps, excessive barking, pulling on the leash, inappropriate chewing, how to teach sit and stay the right way, how to teach your dog to come when called (the first time and EVERY time), crate training, clicker training, and more.
Registration is fast and easy at http://newyearnewdog.YourBestDogEver.com
The free program is open to anyone (not just people who recently adopted or purchased a dog) who wants to learn how to raise “Your Best Dog Ever”(sm). Dog owners can also get free tips and lessons on how to train your dog and train a puppy year-round via Cantrell’s blog at http://www.YourBestDogEver.com.
About Krista Cantrell
Krista Cantrell has been training dogs for more than 17 years. She serves her personal clients from her dog training facility in Cave Creek, Arizona, and is the author of Catch Your Dog Doing Something Right: How to Train Any Dog in Five Minutes a Day; Tao of Puppies: How to Raise a Good Dog Without Really Trying; and Housetrain Your Dog Now. Hartz Shelter Donation Program Reaches Their Goal
Pet Lovers Took Only 10 Days to Connect Struggling U.S. Shelters with Hartz $1,000,000 Donation
The overwhelming response of concerned consumers to Hartz call-to-action is an eloquent sign that pet lovers from all across America are eager to help local shelters. According to Hartz, it's time to seize the moment, time for pet lovers and companies involved with animals to turn concern into actions, and do more to make a difference.
Just over ten days ago, Hartz reached out to pet lovers around the country to nominate local animal shelters who could benefit from a free shipment of 2,000 everyday pet supplies donated by Hartz. The response was overwhelming. No sooner had the announcement gone out that Hartz was looking for shelters in need, than consumer nominations came pouring in and, by the time Hartz ships supplies to all the shelters that were nominated in the first 10 days, Hartz will have shipped out the final $1,000,000-plus worth of pet supplies to reach the $3,000,000 goal.
In July, Hartz Shelter Donation Program was launched, pledging to ship up to $3,000,000 of Hartz pet supplies to animal shelters and food banks in the U.S. and Canada, to help them survive the tough economy. By end November, $1,623,138 worth had been shipped. That’s when Hartz decided to involve consumers, and empower them to help shelters in their communities by connecting them with the Shelter Donations Program.
Hartz Shelter Heroes to be featured on Hartz website.
As inspiration to other pet lovers in the community to make a difference, Hartz will feature their Shelter Heroes and the shelters they helped.
In these days of overcrowded and financially challenged shelters, volunteers can make a difference.
“For pet lovers who want to do something more to help shelters during this economy, there are many wonderful animal advocacy organizations, such as the ASPCA or the Humane Society of the United States, that can guide you on how to volunteer," says Dr. Melinda Fernyhough, Hartz veterinarian. "Shelters depend on volunteers. Whether it's by walking dogs, providing affection and important socialization by playing with caged cats and dogs, working in the office or helping on fundraiser events or websites, or even cleaning out cages, volunteers can make a major contribution to the lives of these abandoned animals while they wait to be adopted."

Photo’s by abc15
The Maricopa County Sheriff’s arrested a total of four people for animal cruelty today in Mesa, AZ. Two that were arrested on four counts of animal cruelty and neglect were Debi and Terrance Carrol. Also arrested were on animal cruelty charges were Jeannetta Berry from Gila Bend and Jorge Gonzales from Mesa.
Just looking at these photo’s is enough to make you sick. Hopefully the Alta Vista Animal Hospital staff will be able to nurture these dogs back to their healthy life and they will find a loving home.

Florida Dog Breeder Defies Court Order Not To Own Dogs
You would think that after being told not to own any dogs stemming from charges of neglect earlier this year, you wouldn’t own any more dogs. Well another one of those so called home breeders named Patricia Dickson from Tampa, FL just didn’t care what the Judge had to say.
This time the Hillsborough County Animal Services working on a tip had found nineteen poodles and a chow chow in Patricia’s house after being told never to own anymore animals. The sad part was when the animal service workers found the dogs in bad shape.
I hate to read about these home base breeders that don’t have a care for these poor dogs and are in it just for the money. If people would stop buying these dogs from newspaper ads or from Craigslist maybe we could put a stop to some of these cruel so called breeders. I know that this woman is up in age but it’s no excuse for what she did to these dogs. Maybe this time the Judge will really make her understand what she did.

Has Ontario’s California’s Dog Laws Gone Too Far Where They Have Become Heartless
A women named Martha Cuellar had lost her two little Chihuahua‘s when they escaped from the backyard last month. After Martha tried to look for her dogs before it got too dark she was unable to find Luna and Osito so the next day she found out that the Inland Valley Humane Society in Pomona, CA had her dogs.
You would have thought that they would have just gave her the little Chihuahua’s with a warning to watch her dogs but NO, they wanted three hundred and fifty dollars for their return. I call that ransom for the dog, you would think that all these shelters have so many dogs these days they would have been a little grateful to have the dog’s owner come and take them home.
The article goes on to say that Martha was out of work and was unable to pay the fine and when she went back a week later the fine now was fife hundred and thirty three dollars. To top it off one of her dogs was adopted and finally the operations manager James Edward felt touched and gave her back the one dog at a reduced rate.
Well Mr. James Edward I have no thanks to say to you after all you put this lady through because your so called Humane Society was not only greedy, but you guys are the most heartless shelter I have read about….. Nothing but greed, when all you had to do was give the women back her two dogs. Like you never had a dog escape before?

Bad Insulin Causes Lawsuit From Dog Owner
A Terrier who had diabetes was on insulin to help save his life, but after taking some possibly bad insulin he had died. Now the owner Larry Friedman has filed a lawsuit against the makers of the insulin Schering-Plough for neglect.
It’s sad when ones friend dies and to wonder if it was due to some bad meds makes it even worst. I remember that I posted this article from the FDA alert on this med hoping to get the word out. What Larry’s suit is stating that the company either knew or should have known about this problem long before the FDA posted this alert? I think he’s got a point that they must have known something.

Arrest Warrants Issued For Pawsatrak Racing Sled Dog Kennel Owners
The Park County Sheriff's Office in Colorado has issued an arrest warrants for the two owners of Pawsatrak Racing Sled Dog Kennel named Samuel Maeser and Diane Elaine Walker. They will be charged with two counts of felony aggravated cruelty for the eight dogs that were found dead and a lot more charges for cruelty to animals.
Last week investigators had removed the dogs from their kennel that were neglected and unfed. How cruel can you be to let these dogs starve to death and say that you are a dog lover? Why didn’t they ask for some help from members of the racing team or the locals in their area? It’s so sad to read again and again about these dog breeders neglecting their dogs and not asking for help.

I Guess It’s Easier To Clone A Dog Then To Train One
That must be their thought over in South Korea, because they are going to be cloning an explosive sniffing dog instead of training another dog. Yes this dog named Quinn is a well known dog and the Jeju Provincial Police wants to make sure that they can just order another one when needed.
I’m no professional in dog training or anything, but you would think that you would get a better dog that was trained for what you want them to do and not to rely on some cloned dog to perform like the real one.

Two Lowlife Dog Owners
NY Women Charger With Torturing Animals
A women named Sharon McDonough has been charged with forty two dead animals that were buried in her back yard she is now being held on bail after an initial arrest in November.
It was reported that some of the dead dogs had been tortured and had their mouths taped with duct tape. Some were even reported as being drowned.
I don’t know about you but if these charges are real, this is one sick lady.

The So Called Motorcycle Drag Racer Jake Silcox Abandons His Animals
This guy Jake Silcox moved out of his house in Sullivan County, Tenn. a month ago and just left his animals to fend for themselves. What a lowlife this guy is. A neighbor said he felt bad to see the animals with no food or water and brought the animals some food, since Jake wasn’t around to feed them.
The Animal Control Officer Aaron West has even been to Jakes house and even left a notice saying: The dogs are thin, need to be seen by a vet (ASAP)” and have No food/water.
I guess he can spend all his money on his bike, but he can’t feed his pets. How low can you get to just walk away from them? And to top it off his neighbor said that one of the dogs must have killed a llama and after telling Jake he finally shows up at a later date and moves the dead animal under a metal shed.
You couldn’t even have buried the poor thing. I hope the Judge throws the book at your butt.

I Guess The Dog Laws Are Lacking In Louisiana
After watching this news video it makes you wonder how people who call themselves dog owners are allowed to treat their dogs like this. The guys neighbor said that she has been complaining about the conditions that the dogs are living in and when you look at the video some of the dogs look like they could use a real meal or two.
It’s so sad to have to see dogs living like this and to watch the local animal control worker making excuses for the owner instead of at least giving him a warning to take better care of the dogs. Sorry, but its blind leading the blind on this one…. Is there anyone one who cares enough in this town to help these dogs?

That’s why Hartz launched this program,” said Bob Shipley, Hartz’ Senior Vice President. “The economic downturn has had a profound effect on family finances. Many familes have been forced to surrender beloved pets to shelters, yet shelters report that donations are down by as much as 30%. We hope that our Hartz Shelter Program will help shelters feed and care for abandoned animals and enable at-risk families to keep their pets.” Hartz Shelter Donation Program offers a range of pet supplies to shelters; such as dog biscuits and bones, meat treats, rawhide, chews, puppy pads, collars and leashes, bowls, toys, grooming products and bedding, flea and tick treatments, vitamins and dental care products, bird seed, rabbit and small animal food.
With half the pledged donation already committed, Hartz has shipped 232,596 pet supply products to 316 shelters in USA and 118,467 more to 36 Canadian shelters. “At first we were overwhelmed at the prospect of accepting over 1,000 items into our cramped animal shelter”, said Tiffiny Koback, Shelter Director at the Saskatoon SPCA, “but it's given us amazing momentum. We won’t have to worry about keeping these pet supplies in stock for months to come.” Steve Carroll, Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies said, “we welcome donations of this nature, which serve two critical needs for shelters; to enrich the stay of surrendered animals, and to help raise funds, stimulate and reward adoption."
While dogs and cats make up the majority in U.S. animal shelters, a smaller number of abandoned birds, rabbits and small animals also need homes. Best Friends Animal Society in Utah, the nation’s largest animal shelter, counts gerbils, rabbits, parrots, horses and potbellied pigs among its estimated 1,700 animals. Patty Hegwood, Best Friends’ Animal Care Director said, “We spend about $500,000 every year on animal food. Without donations, that total annual bill of $500,000 would be much, much higher. Hartz donateda range of food and supplies for birds, rabbits and small mammals, which was really appreciated. ”
By Joining Forces, Businesses Can Make A Difference & Pets Can Benefit
Several supermarket chains that sell Hartz products stepped in to help distribute the pet supplies to needy shelters in their states, including Marsh Supermarkets, Strack & Van Til, Stop-n-Shop, Weiss Markets and United Supermarkets, which recently donated over $100,000 of Hartz pet supplies to five Texas SPCA shelters. “With the holidays approaching, we were inspired by Hartz program to reach out to local shelters, donate thousands of products and host a series of adoption events to match loving animals with loving homes,” said Shannon Swatzell, community relations manager for United Supermarkets, LLC. "Combining business partner strengths in this manner is a win-win for everyone." “Every animal deserves to receive good care and a loving home,” said James Bias, SPCA of Texas President. “Adopting a shelter pet is the best way to add a four-legged member to your family and, if all the family get's involved in the process, you’re sure to make a successful match!”
Ordinary People Can Really Help By Connecting Hartz To Local Shelters In-Need
Hartz is calling out to pet lovers to be Hartz Shelter Heroes. By contacting local shelters about Hartz Shelter Donation Program and connecting them with Hartz in time for the holiday season. “A happy pet helps bring joy to families during a joyless recession, especially during the holiday season,” said Joyce Jacobs, a spokesperson for Harry Chapin Food Bank in South West Florida which serves 160 agencies. “Hartz just shipped us 8,000 pounds of dog treats. This will help families give their dogs tasty treats, chews and bones they couldn't otherwise afford.”

Three 17 Year Olds Beat A Dachshund To Death
Call it sick or whatever you want, but these three kids are now being charged with aggravated animal cruelty for beating to death a Dachshund that was owned by Joy Dalton from Lewisburg, TN. These kids beat the poor dog so bad that they broke five of the dog’s ribs and knocked out one of his eyes.
Joy Dalton said: If they had the audacity to just even approach something small like that, what would they do to somebody else?

So You Thought That Taping Your Dogs Mouth Shut Was OK
Photo by Boulder County Sheriff's Office
Well you can just ask Kenneth Gookin what happens when you tape your dogs mouth shut. Apparently Kenneth didn’t think much about what might happen when he taped his little four month old beagles mouth shut.
Now Kenneth Gookin will be facing animal cruelty charges due to his dog Vicious dyeing from asphyxiation. What a shame for this little puppy to have to die because this kid thought that he’d teach his dog a lesson.
Maybe we all can learn a lesson from what happened to this little dog so that it doesn’t happen again.

Ohio Group Trying To Stop Dog Auctions Needs Your Help
Ohio only has until Monday the 14th to get the 120,700 signatures for this petition to help put a stop to the dog auctions though out the state. The petition is known as the Ohio Dog Auctions Act to help revise the code to make it unlawful to auction or raffle off a dog.
Many of these dogs come from out of state and some come from the states that have already ban the sale of puppy mill dogs. I guess these people that just keep on breeding these poor dogs are in it for the money being that it’s a nine million dollar a year business. Ohio has had a five hundred percent increase in the number of commercial breeders in the last five years making it 7th ranked out of the top ten places for puppy mill breeding.
So if you are from Ohio and care about the cause to help put a stop to these money making breeders you can sign the petition here on the Animal Law Coalition site at the bottom of the page.

Pet Carousel Conducts Nationwide Recall
Pet Carousel Conducts Nationwide Recall of Beef Hoof Products and Pig Ears Because of Salmonella Risk
Company Contact:
Pet Carousel, Inc
800-231-3572
Pet Carousel has initiated a recall of all Pig Ears and all varieties of Beef Hoof pet treats because the products may be contaminated with Salmonella. The problem was discovered after FDA testing found positive results for Salmonella in pig ears and beef hoof products.
These products were recalled because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella can affect both humans and animals. People handling dry pet food and/or pet treats can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the treats or any surfaces exposed to these products.
Healthy people infected with Salmonella may experience some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Although rare, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments including arterial infections, endocarditis (inflammation of the lining of the heart), arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their health care provider immediately.
Pets with Salmonella infections may become lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets may only experience a decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected, but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed any of the affected products or is experiencing any of these symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately.
The following products have been recalled: The affected pig ear products were packaged under the brand names Doggie Delight, Pork Tasteez and Pet Carousel
Item No.:
The affected beef hooves were packaged under the brand names Choo Hooves, Dentley’s, Doggie Delight, and Pet Carousel
Item No.:
The products were distributed nationwide in both bulk and retail packaging for sale in pet food and retail chain stores throughout the country. All sizes and all lots of these pork ears purchased on or after 08/16/2009 and all beef hoof products in all varieties purchased on or after 09/16/2009 made by Pet Carousel are included in this alert.
Pet Carousel has completed notifying its consignees and requested the consignees return affected products and remove them from retail sales. Out of an abundance of caution and concern for public safety, Pet Carousel is issuing this press release to inform consumers of potential risks and to ensure that all affected product has either been returned or otherwise removed from use.
Consumers who have purchased the products described above should cease use and return the product to their place of purchase. Additionally, consumers with questions may contact Pet Carousel at 800-231-3572 from 8:00am to 4:00pm PST.

Here is a guy named Gordon Reibman from Hamilton, NJ who works as an educational program development specialist for troubled kids with the Juvenile Justice Commission. You would think that a guy who works to try and help kids better themselves to stay out of trouble would have thought twice before he kicked his dog to death.
So Gordon Reibman has a domestic fight and kills his greyhound dog, what a lowlife this guy is. You should read some of the comments on the page by some people wanting to do to Gorden what he did to the dog.

St. Louis Judge Sentences 4 Involved In Dog Fighting Ring
After pleading guilty for their involvement in a dog fighting ring a US District Judge named Carol Jackson has sentenced Teddy "Teddy Bogart" Kiriakidis and Ronald Creach to eighteen months in prison and sentenced Michael "Missouri Mike" Morgan and Robert Hackman to three hundred and sixty six days in prison for charges of violating federal animal fighting laws.
U.S. District Judge Carol Jackson said: These dogs were subjected to the kind of cruelty that is sometimes unspeakable for the purpose of entertainment. Most people would find it difficult to take pleasure in watching two animals tear each other apart. Unfortunately, there are people like you who facilitate this activity. Animals were severely maimed and killed as part of this conspiracy. I have to fashion a sentence that deters ... and I hope people think twice about getting involved in this kind of activity.
Read the article by Heather Ratcliffe here.
I personally think that they should have gotten more time for their cruel acts to the dogs. Hopefully one day the laws will be more strict and most people will think first before they get involve with this cruelty towards dogs.

Could Not Walking Your Dog In Australia Land You In Jail
There is a law that is being proposed in Australia that will make it a crime if you don’t walk your dog. The whole idea of the law is to get the dog owners to walk their dog and not keep them chained up or locked in a house and make sure they are feed right.
A spokesman for the Federal Department of Agriculture said: One of the goals of the Australian Animal Welfare Strategy is to develop national standards and guidelines for the care of different kinds of animals.
The head of RSPCA Victoria Dr Hugh Wirth said: The new standards would be regulatory, therefore a breach of the standards is a breach of the law. The draft will tell people what they have to do rather than what they want to do.
When you read the comments it seems like everybody thinks that the government is going too far. So what’s your thought?

So How Many Pet Stores Have You Visited
Well I happened to stop over at Whiskazz and Pawzz who sells a lot of different types of dog related items on their site. One of the best parts of the visit was that they seem to have a special consultant who tests all the toys and treats named Cappi who is a beagle. Now if that isn’t funny I don’t know because how often do you see a real taste tester for the approval on a pet store site.
Another nice part of the site is knowing that some of the presides from the sale is donated towards helping abused and abandoned animals. Now that’s what it’s all about, giving back to help our buddies.
So Stop over @ Whiskazz and Pawzz and check out what Cappi recommends.
I don't want to forget about the Holiday Tips from Joel Silverman
With the holidays just around the corner, families are eagerly planning for the holidays and buying gifts for their pets and for the pet lovers in their life. During this exciting time, pets can easily get into trouble or find themselves in unsafe situations with Christmas trees, holiday lights and sugary treats.
Expert dog trainer and author of anticipated bestselling book What Color is Your Dog? Joel
Silverman offers a quick list of tips to keep dogs happy and safe this holiday season:
2. The person that needs to be involved is the person that will be owning the pet.
3. Many dogs end up in animal shelters and humane societies because they were given as a gift
and their owners weren’t ready for the commitment.
4. Few people have time to take care of a new pet around the holidays.
5. Instead of giving a pet, give a coupon or gift certificate from your local humane society.
1. Try to keep your dog from exploring around the Christmas tree, be aware of what he is doing and make sure that he is not eating or chewing on any ornaments, cords, branches or other holiday décor.
2. Keep the lights off and unplugged when you are away from home. In the event your dog does chew on a cord, he will not be injured or shocked by the electricity.
3. Be aware of all the items you put out around the house during the holidays, including candy. Remember, to always keep dogs away from chocolate!
1. When you invite guests over, make sure they do not feed your dog people food. 2. Little bites of food coming from dozens of guests can add up to more than your dog can
handle and could make him sick. 3. One suggestion is to keep him calm and your guests happy is to put your best friend in a
separate room during your holiday party. 4. One way to keep your pet safe during the party, but still not completely isolated from the fun
would be to have a few of the guests give your dog some Bil-Jac treats before the night is through.
Joel Silverman is the author of new book What Color is Your Dog? and host of Animal Planet’s Good Dog U. (www.canidae.com), a manufacturer of all natural holistic pet foods that are fed and recommended by thousands of certified breeders and rescue organizations throughout North America, launched a pet photo contest in October inviting pet owners to submit their favorite photos of their beloved dogs and cats for a chance to win free pet food for a year.
Hundreds of photos were entered into the contest, portraying family vacations, children hugging their dogs, cats by the windowsill, dogs walking along the seashore, and many other personal photos of the entrants' companion animals.
After narrowing the field down to the top 50 pictures, the entire CANIDAE staff cast their votes for their personal favorites. Kristi Maddox of Broadview, Montana won the dog category for the photo of her Fawn Boxer and Australian Cattle Dog mix jumping in the air to catch snowballs. Maddox wrote, "Our dogs and cats are more than just pets, they are family; and as such their health and nutrition are very important to us. Thank you for making such wonderful foods."
Maddox's dogs Laila and Viktor both endured hardship before coming to live with the Maddox family. Laila had been neglected, left chained to a shed to be a "guard dog" and was underweight. Viktor had been thrown from a car window and suffered from a broken shoulder as well as having other signs of abuse. Both are now happy, well-cared for members of the family.
Amy Rodriguez of Farmington, Minnesota won the cat category for her charming picture of her young cats Attis and Arley snuggled close to one another. Rodriguez wrote, "We feed them FELIDAE Grain Free because Attis is an Egyptian Mau and I read that grain free is best for his sensitive tummy."
In addition to these two grand prize winners, the final vote tallies were so close in the dog category that a second place prize was created and awarded to Diane Scuderi for her photo of Rain, an 8 week old Aussie mix puppy that she helped to rescue after it had been discarded by the side of the road. Scuderi is affiliated with Paw Safe Animal Rescue in Virginia and will receive a 6 month supply of CANIDAE dog food as the second place prize.
"The entire staff here at CANIDAE had a lot of fun looking at and voting on all of these great photos. We noticed that many of these pet owners attached very touching stories to their pictures, describing how they rescued an injured or abandoned pet and did their best to bring them back to health. Often, they said that our food was part of the recovery process. That always puts a big smile on everyone's face around the office," said Jason Castillo, Controller for CANIDAE.
Many of the entrants' photos and stories will appear in a special CANIDAE Pet Foods Facebook Fan Page photo album and on the CANIDAE Pet Foods website.

Top Pet Fitness and Weight Loss Products of 2009
With half of America's pets now estimated to be overweight, the demand for pet fitness products has never been greater. This year the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP) is proud to announce its Top Pet Fitness and Weight Loss Products for 2009.
With half of America's pets now estimated to be overweight, the demand for pet fitness products has never been greater. This year the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP) is proud to announce its Top Pet Fitness and Weight Loss Products for 2009. If you're looking to give your pet a healthy gift this holiday season, consider these innovative offerings.
Harnesses and Leashes
"One of the keys to fitness and weight loss in pets is exercise," states Dr. Ernie Ward, Founder and President of the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention and lead product researcher. "Exercise begins with a comfortable leash and harness and this year we saw several innovations in this category."
Easy Walk Harness and Leash - ECO
Earth-friendly, no-pull walking harness for your dog. Made of 100% recycled milk cartons and all of the packaging is recycled. "This is quite simply the best and most earth-friendly exercise product we've run across this year," comments Gina Toman, registered veterinary technician and one of the testers.
Come With Me Kitty Harness and Leash
"For owners of pudgy felines who think they can't take their cat for a walk, there's a harness for you," says Ward. With its innovative, easy-to-use and secure design, the Come With Me Kitty Harness and Leash is a must for any overweight cat who needs exercise.
Sporn Simple Control Harness
Every dog needs a go-to, everyday harness. Some harness systems require a book of instructions and an engineering degree--not this one. "Sporn has one of the easiest and most comfortable harnesses we've tested. On and off in a matter of seconds, our users commented that this was the one harness they could take with them anywhere (and they did)," remarks Ward.
EzyDog Leash
It's pretty hard to improve on the standard dog leash: handle, rope, and clip. The secret to a better leash is the handle. EzyDog has basically taken a mini water-ski handle and attached it to a dog leash that results in a surprisingly comfortable walking leash. They also added a shock-absorbing stretch material that eases the arm and shoulder strain of abrupt pulls. "Even our most stubborn puller failed to cause dreaded "hand pinch" common with traditional leashes. Walkers with arthritis or other painful hand conditions will appreciate the EzyDog's unparalleled cushion and comfort," comments Ward.
Toys
"Play is an important part of staying healthy for pets," emphasizes Ward. "You are the best toy for your pet, although we found several impressive products that can make playtime more fun--and beneficial--for everyone."
Dog Tornado
The Dog Tornado is the perfect solution to entertaining your dog (or cat). This interactive food game has four layers with rotating discs, and three of these layers have compartments for hiding dog snacks. When your dog rotates a layer, she reveals a hidden snack. The game can be made more or less challenging by altering the layers. "The Dog Tornado provides a workout for the brain as well as a way for improving physical coordination. I recommend hiding sliced veggies for a healthy play period," advises Toman.
Dura Doggie Disc
"Many dogs love to play Frisbee. Trouble is, after a few outings, the disc is trashed," muses Ward. Dura Doggie Disc is an incredibly tough, chew-resistant flying disc that doubles as a water bowl (how cool!). No more shredded palms or cut lips from frayed Frisbees.
ChuckIt! Ball Launcher
"As a guy, the thought of using anything other than my rocket arm to play fetch with seemed insulting," laments Ward. "However, after injuring my elbow and being unable to throw for several weeks, I fell in love with my ChuckIt! Ball Launcher. In fact, my dog loved it so much that even when I resumed my mere mortal ball tossing to her, she insisted on the ChuckIt." Men, women, and children everywhere will find their play sessions more beneficial when using this easy-to-use and inexpensive ball launcher. Men, prepare to be humbled. Dogs, prepare to be thrilled.
FroliCat BOLT Automatic Laser Toy for Cats
"We had a hard time finding an interactive exercise toy that a majority of cats liked. This laser toy comes the closest to pleasing a wide variety of kitties," states Toman. It couldn't be easier to use: set up, turn on, and watch the fun! The FroliCat shines a laser dot in a seemingly random pattern your cat will chase, leap, and pounce on for the 15 minute cycle. "If your cat chases the FroliCat twice a day for 15 minutes, it will be well on its way to better health," adds Dr. Ward
Rumble Bumps
Dogs love anything that makes noise. Dogtronics has designed a line of interactive, touch-activated toys our testers found irresistible. "Our favorite noisy toy was the Rumble Bumps. The test dogs liked the fact that the toy made a variety of sounds when it was batted and chewed and their owners appreciated the silence when it was still. We found it to be a great toy to keep your puppy engaged while home alone," shares Toman.
Food Bowls
"Everybody feeds their dog, so we decided to look at how food bowl selection could impact weight loss and healthy eating habits. Our findings may surprise you," says Ward.
Brake-Fast Dog Bowl
"While this bowl was marketed as an aid to slow eating, we found another use: less feeding guilt," states Dr. Ward. The bowl has three columns in the middle that magically make that half-cup of diet food appear larger. It also takes a dog a little longer to eat, thereby delaying any guilt. "We found it to be a great crutch for pet owners who feel the need to fill the bowl."
Neater Feeder
Perhaps the most-used product is also the messiest. "We observed dogs that are what we term "enthusiastic eaters. These dogs tend to spill their food on the floor, leading to owners adding additional food into the bowl, thereby promoting weight gain," explains Toman. The Neater Feeder solves most of your pet's food and water messes with an innovative edge and drainage system. Our testers liked the different sizes and the ease of cleaning. Your floors will love the no-spill design.
Technology Products
"Technology common for human exercise is now becoming available for pets," notes Ward, who is also a certified personal trainer and Ironman triathlete. "I expect even better products in the next few years that will aid in pet weight loss."
Fitbit
"Quite simply, this product wowed everyone," reports Ward. "While not technically a pet weight loss product, the Fitbit tracks your calories burned, steps taken, distance traveled, and sleep quality. This is important because you can accurately measure how far you've walked your dog and at the same time you're getting in better shape." The tiny Fitbit uses the same type of controller used in Nintendo's Wii system and fits easily into a pocket or on a belt or waistband. Your data is wirelessly transmitted to your computer where you can view your exercise and sleep patterns. For less than a hundred bucks, this is one weight loss tool every pet owner should have.
The Beacon by Ruff Wear Dog Safety Light
"We liked this product because it was small, easy-to-use, inexpensive, and a life-saving idea," says Toman. During the cooler months, we're often forced to walk our dogs when it's dark outside. Everyone's key concern is visibility. Ruff Wear has created a tiny LED light that can be seen up to a half mile away. "Testers liked the three settings, continuous, slow, and fast flash, and that it was easy to clip on or off using the split ring or built-in clip."
DogTread by PetZen Doggie Treadmill
For the dog that has everything--except a good daily walk--you can't beat a treadmill. "With straightforward controls and quiet operation, the DogTread from PetZen is one of our favorite dog treadmills," reports Ward. For busy people or individuals with physical limitations, a dog treadmill is an excellent alternative to outdoor walking.
Other Products
Liver Biscotti
"Dog owners always ask me what the best treat is for pets. Crunchy vegetables are my favorite," answers Ward. For owners desiring a commercial dog treat, it's hard to find a tasty dog treat with less than 1 calorie per piece, but somehow Liver Biscotti has done just that. "Dog owners need to remember it's not the size of the reward that matters to dogs; getting a reward is what's important,"advises Ward.
The Port-A-Poo Poop Bag Holder
"Walking your dog is fun; handling your dog's unexpected bathroom run is not," muses Dr. Ward. Fortunately, there's an easier way to pick up where your dog left off, the Port-A-Poo. With two sizes to fit either on a standard or retractable leash, the Port-A-Poo is a hands-off solution to one of life's messier problems.
DOOG Walkie Belts
"Ok, we were skeptical when we first saw this dog walking belt (for people) from Down Under. I mean, do you really need it? Was this an Aussie gag?" jokes Ward. "However, after just a few strolls, we couldn't walk our dog without it." Its two quick-dispenser pockets for poop bags and hand wipes were enough but the Walkie also holds an mp3 player, cell phone, treats, wallet, keys and other small essentials. "The ability to stylishly hold all our stuff without dragging our walking shorts down was worth the price alone," adds Ward. They also come in matching dog collar styles for all you fashionistas.
VizVest Safety Vest for Dogs
Sure, we know there are tons of dog reflective vests available. This one caught our eye because it easily adjusted to a variety of dog shapes, stayed in place, was lightweight enough for year-round wear, and inexpensive. We also liked the fact that there was an opening on the top that allowed the use of certain walking harnesses. It's true your dog may look like a road-side worker but because the VizVest uses the same materials used in human safety vests , it just may save both your lives.

About this Report and Product Selection
None of the products tested and selected were obtained free of charge nor did APOP inform the product manufacturers that their product was being considered. Further, the manufacturers did not contact APOP or product testers during the evaluation process. The manufacturers were notified of their selection only after the final report was complete. Products were rated on innovation, practicality, availability, cost/benefit, durability, ease of use, and pet/owner acceptance.

After A Long Struggle For The Cause Wisconsin Governor Signs Puppy Mill Bill
With so many groups like the Wisconsin Puppy Mill Project, Inc. and the I-Team investigation of the puppy mills though out the state the Gov. Jim Doyle has finally signed the AB-250 law into affect that will hopefully shut down some of these despicable breeders that we call puppy mills.
Some of the laws are:
The bill requires all of the following to obtain licenses, with limited exceptions:
1. A person who sells 25 or more dogs in a year (including a nonresident who
brings dogs into this state for sale).
2. A person who operates a dog breeding facility (a place at which dogs are bred
and raised) from which 25 or more dogs are sold in a year.
3. A person who operates an auction at which 50 or more dogs are sold or offered
for sale in a year.
4. A person who operates an animal shelter that is used to shelter at least 25
dogs in a year.
5. A person who operates an animal control facility under a contract with a city,
village, town, or county.
Sale of dogs This bill prohibits a licensee from transferring a dog to a buyer before the dog
is seven weeks old. The bill requires a licensee to provide the purchaser of a dog with a copy of the dog’s vaccination records and with a statement from a veterinarian who examined the dog stating that the dog had no infectious or contagious diseases at the time of examination.
The bill prohibits any person from selling at auction a dog that is not spayed or neutered unless the dog has tested negative for brucellosis.
The bill also requires a person who sells or offers to sell a dog at a temporary dog market, such as a flea market, to provide information about the dog to the operator of the temporary dog market. It requires the operator of a temporary dog market to register with DATCP, review and keep the information provided by sellers, and, if dogs are sold or offered for sale on two or more consecutive days, have a veterinarian examine the dogs.
Standards of care The bill requires licensees to provide dogs with adequate food, water, veterinary
care, shelter, and opportunity for exercise. The bill requires enclosures for dogs to be of appropriate size and structurally sound. It requires licensees to keep enclosures clean and to follow restrictions on the use of wire flooring. Under the bill, a licensee must ensure that each dog is observed every day in order to monitor the health and temperament of the dog and provide care as needed.
Enforcement and administration A person who fails to obtain a license required under this bill may be fined not
more than $10,000 or imprisoned not more than nine months or both. Violations of other requirements in the bill are punishable by forfeitures (civil monetary penalties). The bill authorizes the use of a citation, which is similar to a traffic ticket, in case of a violation that is punishable by a forfeiture.
Now if we can get the rest of the states to sign on to these bills to help protect our buddies it would be great. So we all must keep on pushing to help stop the puppy mills.
